TV at it's best and it wasn't even on the air. It was Lights! Camera! Action! stay tuned, pictures at 11:00, with
no commercial brakes nor words from your favorite sponsors. A perfect program.
Confused? OK then, here's the scoop. It was a total surprise birthday bash celebrating 61 years of the one and
only, famous, infamous, all known and loved by all Dave Ward. For those of you visiting from another planet,
Dave
Ward is and has been KTRK TV-13 news anchor for the past 34 years. The lavish party was hosted by Dave's very good friend, Charles Joekel, and Dave's extreeemely very good friend Laura Rowe, and took place at Charles's to- die-for River Oaks domain. It was "It's Your Life" in living
color, complete with life-size cutouts of baby-boy Dave, video retrospective and live, on the scene commentaries
(more like roasts) from Dave's long time buds and budettes. Makes you wonder who was doing the nightly news that
evening, as the who-is-who of TV land were at the party. Some of the
familiar faces were: Ed Brandon, Marvin Zindler, Don Nelson, Tom Koch, Art
Rascon, Frank Billingsly, Steve Smith, Lisa Trippani, Dave's very first co-anchor
Dan Amerman, Bunny Orsak (former TV-13 personality "Kitirik") Kitty Borah (former TV-13
Kitty's Corner), Jim Masucci (Former TV-13 GM) and Jim's wife Diane, from LosAngeles, Jonni Hartman and
husband Ray Rogers. Old pals Molly Smyth, Kathryn Blissard, Warner Roberts, Eldon
Creech. Of Course Dave's family from far and near: sister, Shirley Hanson from Atlanta, daughter
Linda with husband Bill Heathley from Dallas and son David Ward Jr.
and wife Diane. And just to list but a handful of Dave's Houston bestfriends: Judy Nichols with Rich
Little,
Anna Williams, Grant Guthrie, Carol and Dennis Irvine, Alan VanDix, Gigi Huang,
Sherri Zucker, Andy and Dr. Del Delery, Carol and Dr. Tom Sawyer, Beverly Wren, Harold
Wiesenthall and Libby Feingersh, John and Shelly Kinch and the list goes on and on.Swell Soiree for Sara Selber
The famous, fabulous and flamboyant interior designer Kelly Gale Amen, recently hosted a fun-fantastic birthday
party for the equally fabulous Sara Speer Selber. On the party invitation Kelly penned the following, and I
quote
"43 is a difficult birthday, one realizes they are less than a decade away from that dreaded A.A.R.P. card and a
life filled with Senior Citizen Discounts and Early Bird Specials. Sara needs the support of her friends at this
difficult time". What a guy, that Kelly is, so sensitive. Being chronologically impaired myself, I just can't
wait for Kelly's birthday, when I can reciprocate with an equally cute remark. But seriously, Sara wouldn't be Sara and Kelly wouldn't be Kelly if they didn't have an ulterior motif. This one however you will like. The birthday party was disguised as fundraiser for Sara's favorite cause; Camp Hope. In lieu of gifts, there were donations to Camp Hope in Sara's honor. Kelly in his infinite spirit of benevolence created a throne chair (he is the King) which was auctioned off at an AIDS Gala and brought $35,000 with the proceeds to benefit the Aids Foundation for Camp Hope. ![]() ![]() The gathering was held at Kelly's home studio, widely known as The Compound. The Compound is a living, breathing and pulsating confirmation and testimonial to Kelly Amen's interior design style, his line of furniture, beauty, power, light and his whimsical artistic vision. Complete with a swimming pool, Zen-like garden and must not forget his best friend, the Fire Hydrant, Kelly's Dalmatian divine dog (call him Fire for short). So, who all was there soaking up all that beauty, culture and artistic trappings, as well as toasting Sara her commemoration of birth?, how about Greg Perrin, Ed Smith, Cherri Carbonara, Yolanda Green, Dr. and Mrs. Marvin Speer, Lil Golsobel, Beverly Singer, Debra Cohen, Mack Rogers, Joe Pascoe, Carole Alm, Suzy Landgraff, Shari Koziol, Sally Salners, Jim Benton, Paulette Arana, Paul Gustafson, Raana Rosenberg, Leslie Robinson, Lee Wunsch, Linda Burger, Suzanne Jacobson, Vicki Evans, Sherrie Eisenman, Carolyn Kaplan, Jan Miller, Janis Fishman, Lori and Stuart Speer, Frieda Dow, Suzy Ginsburg, Tara Sondock, Jennifer Koppel, Susan Lack and more, but that's all Sara can recall. After all, she is 43. |
